Opiates is a class of drugs
containing both prescription and illegal drugs derived originally from Opium
Poppy. They are usually prescribed to relieve acute and severe pain. This class
contains a wide variety of drugs including codeine, morphine, illegal drugs
like heroin etc. which are very addictive. Their regular use can lead to
dependence and addiction.
Once addicted, sudden cessation of drug intake leads to painful withdrawal symptoms
such as:
· Anxiety
· Nausea
· Vomiting
· Agitation
· Muscle pain
· Diarrhoea
· Tremors
· Hot and cold flushes
You cannot deal with opiate withdrawal symptoms on your own. Professional help is
needed to get rid of them.
Diagnosis of Opiate Addiction:
Physical examination along with a number of lab tests, including blood and urine tests
are performed to make a diagnosis. The doctor asks you about your drug abuse
history, any other ailment, etc. Once diagnosis and safety is established,
treatment is started accordingly.
Treatment of Opiate Addiction:
Different methods, which can either be inpatient or outpatient are used for opiateaddiction treatment Which method is to be used depends on the condition of the
addict and his drug intake history. Some of them are described below:
· Detoxification: a controlled withdrawal in the presence of experts is performed at
our rehab center. It is the first step in treating addiction. In this treatment
method, FDA approved medicines are used. These include Methadone, Naltrexone
and Buprenorphine. All these medicines work differently. Methadone and
Buprenorphine decrease withdrawal symptoms, while Naltrexone saves you from
getting high. These medicines also help you with cravings.
· Counselling: both individual and group counselling therapies are found to be
effective in this regard. Group therapies make you realise that you are not
alone in this battle. You get to know about the stories of other people which
is really helpful.
· Cognitive behavioural therapy: in this therapy, you are taught management and coping
skills. You learn how to get rid of negative thoughts which lead you to opiate
misuse. Counsellor teaches you how to replace negativity with positivity. Once
learnt, these skills should last for a lifetime.
